Pressure switch

A pressure switch is a type of switch mechanism, which makes electrical contact when a certain pressure has been reached on its input. The working principle is the same as an electrical switch, which drives a light. Instead of a hand, the pressure on the device is switching the light (source).

This mechanic device is used to provide on/off switching for different sources. The switch could be designed to make contact either on pressure rise or on pressure fall.

Pressure switch as alarm

The pressure switch detects certain set up-thresholds, if a certain pressure is achieved, the device switches from on to off or from off to on. Generally, a pressure switch is applied as an alarm or shutdown device in any type of equipment/system that generates some type of pressure during operation.

Examples:

  • Switching off the driven gas compressor, when the requested pressure is achieved in the reservoir.
  • Monitoring the pressure of the lubrication system for turbines, gear boxes, pumps,...
  • Indicating an alarm when dust filter has to be serviced
  • Controlling a level in a liquid tank (overfill protection)
  • Monitoring the pressure in process vessel (alarm application)
